So it's that time of year again and I'd love any and all advice regarding making Amie's garden a success! My carrots are doing all right, and my green onions from last fall are actually growing now, with little to no water, which is really weird. Last night I cut up a red bell pepper for our dinner and found a hundred seeds inside and got the wild hair to plant them. So does anyone have experience with red bell peppers? They are good stuff--I totally don't use them enough in my cooking. I always think they're going to be hot and spicy, but they are not; they are sweet. And the one I added to our beef with broccoli stir fry last night (yum!) was so good and sweet and tender--not at all like the overprocessed limp chewy ones you get in your fajitas in restaurants. These were really good, and gave me the gardening bug again.
Please, advice! I need it! How often do I water? How much at a time? Do I plant 3-4 seeds in each hole or just one? How important are fertilizer and gypsum? Because I hate that step. It's not done me any good in the past, either. How often do I have to do that? It's been at least 12 months since I've treated my soil. Thanks in advance!

There is a really good book about gardening in the desert. I think it's called Desert Gardening. I check it out periodically at our library. I'll have to look up the name for sure. Fertilizer is very important. The number of seeds depends on what you are planting. Some things do better already started like tomatoes and bell peppers. Watering depends on your area and the weather, too. Good Luck!!! Gardening is so fun.

I'm hooked on All New Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew. It is a way of gardening in a smaller space- and the book is so interesting. :) What I've read from this is about all I know about gardening and I can't wait to try it out this year! :) Good luck with whatever you do. :)
I had a beautiful garden in Denver and in Massena...not in Florida.
So now I do just herbs, tomatoes, peppers and lettuce ALL IN POTS!!
It seems to work out okay for now.
Even here I fertilize...I even use Miracle Grow!! It does help. I would think you would need to water twice daily. Before and after sun rise/set. Put your finger in the soil and if 1 inch deep it is dry, you need to water.
I also agree with getting a book at the library...or even google searching desert gardening.
Isn't fresh sooooo much better??? I love going out front and getting the herbs I need for my recipes!!

In Arizona I had good success with tomato, green beans, swiss chard, and squash(yellow and zucchini). I think it is better to overwater than underwater if you are going to make a mistake! I can't really be too much help other than telling what I grew cause I am still a novice myself. Good Luck though!
