happy birthday to cameron

Last Monday, Cameron turned 8!  We did something special and let him stay home from school and have a day with Mom & Dad.  We've never done that before, but my kids hardly ever miss school.  They're rarely sick and I never take them out 'just because'.  So this was indeed something cool for Cameron.

We started out with a good nutritious breakfast.  :)

3 cheers for yummy pancakes and Denny's hot chocolate!

Then we picked up some movies from the library.

And went to see "How to Train your Dragon" at the movie theatre.  It was totally cute-I really loved it and so did Cameron.

After the boys got home, we continued on the fat-fest by dining at TGIF.

He chose this place not because he likes the food so much, but because he likes that the waiters sing to you on your birthday.

See?

And they bring a bowl of ice cream.  Yum!

So fast forward a week to this past Saturday when we celebrated his birthday again with cake, a friend, and a day at Castles and Coasters.

Now, disclaimer.  For a cake this year, Cameron decided he wanted a Mario Brothers cake.  I did a google search and found all of these amazing cakes done  with fondant and 5+ different colors and height and dimension and. . . I just knew it wasn't happening.  Our week was completely full and between school, volunteering, the Easter Pageant, hosting a scrappy crop, and more, I just knew something had to give.  And the cake was that something.

So Friday morning when I went grocery shopping, I bought two boxes of chocolate cake mix, 2 tubs of white frosting, and just hoped that inspiration would strike.  Friday afternoon I reminded him that we needed to solidify the cake idea.  He suddenly said, "I want a ghost cake!!"

Done!!

I even had the right color of frosting.  *score!*

Now, even with the simplicity which should have been the production of this cake, it is far from my finest work.  I could detail all the things that went wrong as I was building it, but none of that matters.  All that matters is that when Cameron saw it Saturday morning, the morning of his party, he said, "Wow!"  And that means success.

Then Dad took Cameron and his friend to Castles n' Coasters, which was sadly, quite packed.  We hadn't even thought about how this was a holiday weekend.  :(  So they didn't get to ride much, but they had a lot of fun on the golf course, rescuing dozens of golf balls from the ponds.
